Matthias Bass is a PhD student in the Complex Environmental Systems Laboratory under Dr. Lael Parrott at UBCO. Currently Mr. Bass is in his 7th year as an R user, he offered workshops for R beginners and advanced users at his previous university (TU Kaiserslautern, Germany). In addition, Mr. Bass is writing new functions, code extensions and R packages for individual R users. His first experience with an open source program, as he describes it, has been “sitting in front of a blank console on the computer screen, frustrated to write anything, because of all the error messages popping up one after another, as a result of having no programming experience”. It had been those first steps, which made him decide, to share his experience and to help beginners with their start in R.

He did his German Diploma in biology at the Technische Universitaet Kaiserslautern in Germany. His research expertise mainly focused on lichen ecology. If he is not writing codes in R or exploring packages, he is outdoors finding rare lichen species.
