Invited Speaker Series

BRAES brings several distinguished speakers to Kelowna each year to speak about their research.  These talks are open to the campus community and to the public.

For 2017-2018 the distinguished speakers we have confirmed are:

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017

Dr. Colleen St. Clair, University of Alberta.
Host Lab: Complexity Lab, Dr. Lael Parrott
Information about Dr. St. Clair is available here:

Wednesday, March 28th, 2018

Dr. Nathan (Nate) Swenson, University of  Maryland.
Host Lab: Biodiversity and Landscape Ecology Research Facility, Dr. Jason Pither
Tittle: “Functional perspectives on tree community  structure and dynamics: from traits to transcriptomes”
Information about Dr. Swenson: (http://www.swensonlab.com/ )
Dr. Swenson is a leader in plant biodiversity research. He has  published a remarkable 111 papers, and has an H-index of 46, despite being an early-career researcher (less than 10 years as a prof). Dr. Swenson is at the forefront of research aiming to identify the mechanisms  underlying spatial patterns of plant diversity, primarily in tropical forests. He is PI on multiple NSF grants, including a recently  awarded grant that aims to complement functional-trait approaches with transcriptomics – examining whether patterns of gene expression among  individuals helps to explain co-occurrence patterns.
